Why Epicutis
Epicutis is where Japanese skincare philosophy meets Princeton-developed biotechnology. The brand was born from decades of research at Signum Biosciences, a biotech company spun out of Princeton University, and combines that scientific background with the formulation expertise of Masanori Tamura, the Japanese formulator behind Hada Labo, one of Japan’s best-known moisturizer lines.
At the heart of the line are Epicutis’ proprietary ingredients, including TSC, a patented “super-lipid” designed to support the skin barrier and help calm inflammatory pathways, and HYVIA®, a patented extract derived from organic, non-GMO chia seed oil that helps support hydration and barrier function.
The formulas also incorporate thoughtfully sourced botanicals, including Hinoki Wood Oil from Japanese cypress, valued for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and soothing properties. Epicutis sources its Hinoki oil from carefully managed Japanese forests, bringing a distinctly Japanese ingredient story into its modern clinical formulations.
What makes Epicutis especially unique is its focus on minimal, effective formulas rather than long ingredient lists. The line is fragrance-free and positioned around ingredient transparency, barrier support, and skin health. Epicutis is also the only fully EWG Verified® skincare line exclusive to the professional channel, with products formulated to meet EWG standards as well as Proposition 65 and EU requirements.
